Island Volunteers Needed

It's time to think about getting outside to see what needs to be done not only in our own yards but in and around the 45+ islands and signs throughout the neighborhood.

As you may or may not know, we as residents of Prairie Fields have the privilege and responsibility to maintain these common ground areas. Over the past years countless residents have volunteered to keep these areas beautiful. As spring starts to unfold we on the Board of Directors intend to keep this tradition moving forward. We are once again looking for additional volunteers.

Within the next few weeks you may start to see some small Adopt Me signs in islands that are in need of a volunteer or two.

If you are interested in helping, you may email or call me.

Your help will be greatly appreciated and will add to the beauty and value of our neighborhoods.

Maintaining an island consists of:
  • Spring clean up
  • Planting of annuals & perennials
  • Watering, weeding, and trimming
  • Leaf removal in the Fall
The City of Prairie Village provides weekly mowing

Trash Guidelines for Prairie Fields
Posted on Jan 3rd, 2012
Recently, the Johnson County Landfill has announced it will no longer accept yard waste beginning in 2012. While this change will affect many of the surrounding communities, Prairie Village’s service will remain the same because yard waste is currently composted under the city contract & ordinances.

Those residents under the city contract (including Prairie Fields homeowners) will still be able to set out 8 yard waste items per week during the months of January, February, May, June, July and December and 12 yard waste items per week during the months of March, April, August, September, October and November. Yard waste should be placed in a biodegradable paper bag or a 35 gallon or less rigid container.

In addition, many surrounding communities are moving to a pay-as-you-throw system where monthly fees will be based on volume of trash collected. The City of Prairie Village contracts with Deffenbaugh each year and assesses residents on their property tax statement for annual trash fees. The current limits on trash and yard waste will still apply in 2012. No changes will occur to the current system.

For more information about trash, recycling, and yard wast services provided in Prairie Fields, please contact Prairie Village City Hall at 913-381-6464.
